Sports In Huntsville

Huntsville is a town of many, many talents. From our incredible aerospace and aviation industry to the bountiful beauty of Huntsville Botanical Garden (home to the nation’s largest butterfly house!), those of us who live in the Rocket City are definitely part of a winning team. A HUGE part of the camaraderie and spirit of Huntsville is our dedicated leave-it-all-on-the-field sports teams. Check them out!

BASEBALL: The Rocket City Trash Pandas
We think a name like that is a home run in and of itself! Our own Rocket City Trash Pandas are North Alabama’s official Minor League AA baseball team and 2021 is the year it all begins! Want to support the team? Check out the hats, shirts and other great gear at the team’s store in Bridge Street Town Centre.

FOOTBALL
Alabama is no stranger to football. Our state, and the entire south, really, just LOVE the game and we’re fiercely loyal to our teams. Huntsville has football teams of its own:
Alabama A&M Bulldogs – an NCAA Division I college team
Huntsville Tigers – a women’s tackle football team in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) league.
Huntsville Rockets – a semi-pro team named for the original and beloved Huntsville Rockets Football Team in the 1960s.

HOCKEY
Yes, HOCKEY! In Huntsville we have our own teams—the pro team, Huntsville Havoc, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville’s (UAH) Chargers. You’ll want to plan to slide over to the Von Braun Center and take in a high energy, high stakes hockey match. The sport is actually a very popular local pastime. And it’s just one of the things that make Huntsville such an interesting place to call home. Huntsville Havoc is a member of the Southern Professional Hockey League and the UAH Chargers team is part of NCAA Division I.

RACING
Love racing? Huntsville has your passion. The Huntsville Speedway is a quarter-mile track that hosts stock car and modified car racing. This track has hosted many a legendary racer over its many years. Richard Petty enjoyed one of his earliest wins here. It must have been that Huntsville luck.

Whatever game gets you going, Huntsville has it and our neighbors and friends love getting together to cheer on the home team. Come be a part of it!

Traditional Neighborhood Design

The Village of Providence is a traditional development that sets a new standard of excellence for Huntsville residents. A neighborhood that goes beyond a development – and creates a community.

Like a glass of sweet tea on a hot August day, the Village of Providence is positively filled with Southern charm. Whether strolling down the sidewalk or driving the tree-lined streets, one feels a sense of being in that perfect hometown grandparents still talk about. Picturesque homes are intermixed with brownstones, traditionally styled townhomes, and apartments, as well as professional offices, stores, and businesses.

Providence is a place for families that is reminiscent of the neighborhoods of Boston, San Francisco, New York and the great towns and villages of Europe. It is a neighborhood that is more than a collection of houses and yards – a place where families are part of a close-knit and active community.

Traditional Design

Andres Duany and Elizabeth Platter-Zyberk of DPZ & Company were commissioned by Slyman Development Company to create a master plan for The Village of Providence in 2002. One of DPZ’s early projects in the late 1980’s was Seaside, Florida, one of the first authentic new towns to be built in the US in the past 50 years. They designed a place for people first and vehicles second. The streets are narrower and the placement of trees and sidewalks all make walking the priority. Planners placed homes on each homesite with care, making them both inviting and private.

The community’s architects designed front porches to be inviting but allow enough distance for seclusion. Commercial buildings continue the look and feel of the community using traditional architecture that blends into the overall aesthetics.

The Village of Providence started as a dream to capture the lifestyle of a small town with the convenience of city living. And while its success is apparent on many levels, it may be best measured by its recent recognition as the NAHB’s Best in American Living Award for Community of the Year, recognizing excellence in community development and design.
